Convert PDF to Markdown
with Parsyra

Parsyra sends the uploaded PDF to our self-hosted Parsyra service, processes it in temporary storage, and deletes the source file immediately afterward. Scanned pages can use High-accuracy OCR for text, tables, and formulas. Headings and paragraph flow survive the trip intact; tables and multi-column layouts need a closer look, and the sections below say exactly why instead of pretending otherwise.

Free accounts take files up to 20MB, three at a time; Pro raises that to 100MB and batches of 30. Scanned pages carry no text layer at all, so those go through AI OCR rather than the standard PDF to Markdown path.

Run PDF to Markdown with Parsyra

Choose a file or drag it onto the panel. The server-side Parsyra engine extracts the document structure and assembles one Markdown file you can preview, copy, or save as .md. Files that were digital from birth — exported reports, arXiv preprints, invoices produced by accounting software — give the cleanest results, because their glyphs are stored as characters rather than as pixels.

// how it works

What Happens During PDF to Markdown Conversion

Four stages sit between dropping a file in and saving a .md out. Knowing what each stage can and cannot see makes the result far easier to trust, and it explains the handful of places where PDF to Markdown output still wants a human pass before you ship it.

01

Process the File Temporarily

The uploaded PDF is sent over HTTPS to our self-hosted Parsyra service. It is written to temporary storage for the conversion and deleted immediately afterward; the source file is not added to your account.

02

Read the Embedded Text Layer

The Parsyra service reads the text layer each page declares and uses it to build the Markdown result. If selecting a sentence in a viewer does nothing, the layer is absent and standard PDF extraction has nothing at all to work from; use High-accuracy OCR for scanned pages.

03

Assemble the Output

Those items are stitched back into lines and paragraphs and emitted in the order the file declares them. For single-column prose that order matches how a person reads. For a two-column journal article or a folded brochure it can alternate between the columns, which is the one thing worth checking before you trust a long PDF to Markdown run unread.

04

Review, Then Save

The preview pane shows the finished PDF to Markdown text before you commit to it. Skim for hyphenated line breaks and for ligatures — justified typesetting stores fi, fl and ffi as single glyphs, and a word broken across two lines keeps its hyphen — then copy the text or download the .md file.

// why Parsyra

Why Run PDF to Markdown Here

Any number of tools will take a document and hand back text. These are the specific trade-offs behind this PDF to Markdown converter, including the two or three that are not flattering.

📑

Headings and Prose Survive

Hierarchy and paragraph breaks are the parts of a document that translate most reliably, and they happen to be what downstream tools actually consume. Body copy, bullet runs and section titles come back as readable text you can edit straight away rather than an undifferentiated wall you have to re-break by hand.

🔒

Temporary Processing, Clear Data Flow

The standard PDF to Markdown path uses our self-hosted Parsyra service. The source file is written to temporary storage, converted, and deleted immediately afterward. Scanned PDFs can use High-accuracy OCR when you choose that action.

🤖

Feeds LLMs and Vector Stores

Chunking a fifty-page report for retrieval works far better against plain text than against binary page objects. A PDF to Markdown pass drops the content straight into a RAG pipeline, an embedding job or a prompt, at a small fraction of the tokens a screenshot of the same page would burn.

Consistent Server-Side Output

The same Parsyra engine handles the conversion across browsers and devices. Processing time depends on the page count and document complexity; scanned pages may take longer because High-accuracy OCR analyzes their page images.

🆓

Honest About Tables

The format stores a table as ruled lines and positioned glyphs, with nothing anywhere marking where a cell begins or ends. So PDF to Markdown output hands you table content as text lines instead of pipe syntax invented from pixel coordinates, which would drift a column out of place sooner or later. Rebuild the grid by hand, or convert the source spreadsheet.

📥

A Path for Scanned Pages

Photographed and faxed documents hold images, not characters, so extraction returns nothing whatsoever. High-accuracy OCR covers that case and reads tables and LaTeX math from the page: 10 pages a month on Free, 500 a month on Pro. An empty result almost always means this, and this is the fix for it.

PDF to Markdown — Questions People Actually Ask

The engine behind PDF to Markdown, the ceilings on it, and the cases where a document simply refuses to cooperate.

How do I convert PDF to Markdown here?

Drag a file onto the panel above, or click it to browse. The file is sent to the server-side Parsyra engine, and the finished text lands in the preview pane. Copy it from there or save it as .md. No install or payment is required for the standard path.

Is PDF to Markdown conversion free?

The standard conversion is free and does not require an account, with files up to 20MB and batches of three. Pro raises those limits to 100MB and 30 files. High-accuracy OCR is metered at 10 pages per month on Free and 500 pages per month on Pro.

Does my file get uploaded anywhere?

Yes. The standard conversion sends the PDF to our self-hosted Parsyra service, where it is processed in temporary storage and deleted immediately afterward. High-accuracy OCR sends scanned PDFs to the OCR service for recognition when you choose that action.

Why did PDF to Markdown return an empty result?

Almost certainly because the pages are pictures. A scan, a phone photo or a fax carries no character data behind the pixels, so the extractor finds nothing to read and writes nothing out. Open the file in any viewer and try to select a sentence with your cursor; if the highlight will not stick, switch that file over to High-accuracy OCR.

Why are the two columns interleaved?

Items come out in the order the file declares them, and a two-column paper frequently alternates left and right instead of finishing one side before starting the other. Single-column documents are unaffected. For journal articles, running the PDF to Markdown pass and then reflowing the affected passages is usually quicker than fighting the original layout.

What happens to tables?

They arrive as lines of text rather than pipe tables. That is deliberate. Nothing in the format records where one cell stops and the next begins, so any tool promising flawless grids is guessing from coordinates and will shift a column quietly on you. If tables are the whole point of the document, High-accuracy OCR can reconstruct them, and a spreadsheet source converts far more cleanly.

Do ligatures and hyphens come through?

Yes, and it catches people out. Professionally typeset files keep fi, fl and ffi as single glyphs and split words across lines with a hyphen, and both habits survive extraction. A find-and-replace pass over the PDF to Markdown output clears them in under a minute, and it is worth doing before the text reaches a search index or an embedding model.

Which other formats can Parsyra handle?

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML and plain text each have a dedicated converter, and the widget on the homepage accepts any of them. Anything carrying real structural markup — a DOCX or an XLSX — produces tidier results than PDF to Markdown ever can, because the structure is recorded in the file rather than inferred from where the ink happens to sit.

Is this the same tool as Parsyra?

No. Microsoft publishes Parsyra as an open-source Python library, and that project is not connected to this website. This site is operated independently and hosts its own conversion service; Microsoft neither endorses nor reviews it.

Related tools: go the other direction with the Markdown to PDF converter, start from a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet when structure matters, pull in a live web page, or tidy the result in the Markdown editor.

Ready for a PDF to Markdown Run?

Free, straightforward, and upfront about its limits. Drop a file above and read the PDF to Markdown output before deciding whether it is useful to you. Bigger documents, bigger batches, and more OCR pages live on Parsyra Pro.
